WINERED: a near-IR spectrograph being ready for exploring the Universe in a relatively unexplorerd window 0.9-1.35 micron

WINERED is a near-IR spectrograph for a wide wavelength range of 0.9-1.35 micron with the resolving power of 28,000. Higher resolution modes with the resolution up to 70,000 are available but for either Y band (0.96-1.11 micron) or J band (1.14-1.35 micron) at one time. In 2017, we carried out a few observing runs with NTT 3.58-m telescope at La Silla observatory, ESO, and confirmed its performance, e.g. the limiting magnitude reaching J=13.7 mag with a 1-hr integration (or deeper for a lower resolution and/or with a longer integration). The limiting magnitude would be about 1 mag deeper with a Magellan telescope. We will introduce the instrument as well as scientific motivations of some of our targets including pulsating stars like RR Lyrs and Cepheids in the Milky Way, nearby galaxies, and more.
