Extreme nearby star-forming regions as stellar laboratories

Abstract

The surprising detection of high ionization rest-UV nebular emission lines in reionization-era galaxies has proved a substantial challenge to modern stellar population models. I will present results from our ongoing HST/COS UV spectroscopic programs targeting metal-poor star-forming galaxies in the local universe, providing empirical context for these high redshift observations. These observations reveal significant unresolved tension with models in hard ionizing spectra predictions at the lowest metallicities. I will also describe our campaign to identify new analog systems hosting young stellar populations below 10% solar metallicity using large photometric surveys and MMT follow-up, which may help us understand these discrepancies and calibrate models applicable to reionization-era systems.
