Modelling the Gas Around Galaxies

I will discuss work using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations with full physics models to explain some outstanding problems of modelling the intergalactic medium and related absorption systems. These problems include the narrow velocity width distribution of damped Lyman-alpha systems, the existence of remarkably large Lyman-alpha emitters around galactic halos and the surprisingly large number of photons required at z=0.1. I will then show that in the same simulations, new problems emerge, connected with matching observed carbon absorption. Finally, I will discuss a new technique for using machine learning to detect DLAs in SDSS spectra.
