An update on GMT and the full story on AO for the ELTs

Dr. Rebecca Bernstein (GMTO, Carnegie Observatories)

GMT has made enormous progress in the last 5 years. Programmatically, we’ve joined forces with TMT and AURA to form the US-ELT Program and received a top ranking from Astro2020, a crucial step in gaining support from the NSF and engaging the US community. Technically, we’ve made enormous progress as well. In this talk, I will bring you up to date on the status of the project, focusing on one of the most important performance issues for the observatory: how GMT will align and phase to achieve diffraction limited resolution. By the end of this talk, you will understand the basics of AO, the challenges that are common to all three of the ELTs, and how GMT is solving them to achieve diffraction limited resolution.
